Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy is needed when the nerve of a tooth is affected by decay, repeated dental procedures, or a cracked or chipped tooth. In order to save the tooth, the pulp (the living tissue inside the tooth), nerves, bacteria, and any decay present inside the tooth are removed and the space that is left is filled, which restores the tooth to its full function.

Having a root canal done on a tooth is the treatment of choice to save a tooth that otherwise has to be removed. Many patients believe that removing a tooth that has problems is the solution. However, extracting (pulling) a tooth could ultimately be more costly and cause problems for adjacent teeth.

Signs and Symptoms for possible root canal therapy:

An abscess (or pimple) on the gums. Sensitivity to hot and cold. Severe toothache pain. Swelling and/or tenderness. Injury or trauma to the tooth. Sometimes no symptoms are present.

Approximately two weeks after root canal therapy is completed, the tooth should have a crown (cap) placed. This will protect the tooth and prevent it from breaking, and restore it to its full function.

Anesthesia and Sedation

Several medications are available to help create more relaxed, comfortable dental visits. Some drugs control pain, and some help you relax during dental treatment.

We will discuss a number of factors when deciding which drugs to use for your treatment: the type of procedure, your overall health, history of allergies and your anxiety level are considered when determining which approach is best for your particular case.

Working together, we can choose the most appropriate steps to make your dental visit as comfortable as possible. (More Info)
