All about Las Vegas, Nevada
Mexico-born Rafael Rivera was the first non-Native American to enter the Las Vegas valley. Rivera was part of Antonio Armijo’s expedition to open up a trade route—the Old Spanish Trail between New Mexico and California in 1821. Rivera named the valley Las Vegas, meaning “the meadows” in Spanish, after its spring-watered grasses.
In 1905 the San Pedro, Los Angeles, and Salt Lake railroad arrived in Las Vegas, connecting the city with the Pacific and the country’s main rail networks. The railroad company auctioned off 100 acres of land in May of 1905, and Las Vegas was officially on the map.
Las Vegas was established as a railroad town when the railroad linking Southern California with Salt Lake City was finally completed. Having plenty of water made Las Vegas an ideal refueling point and rest stop.
Work started on the Hoover dam in 1931, and the population exploded from 5,000 citizens to 25,000. The majority of newcomers were looking for a job building the dam. However, the workforce consisted of males from across the US created a market for large-scale entertainment.
Las Vegas business owners and Mafia crime lords helped develop the casinos to entertain the construction workers. And by the time gambling was legalized again in 1931, organized crime already had roots in the city.
